The sideboard gets pretty spicy: a split between Abrade and By Force for artifact destruction, a few copies of Crook of Condemnation for graveyard strategies, two Sweltering Suns for when our spot removal isn't enough, and two copies of Cancel for non-creature matchups ( Disallow would obviously be the better option if you wanted to spend a few bucks). That might be wrong, though I'm not sure. The lands are pretty straightforward: four Aether Hubs (mostly to pre-bank energy), fourīecause I really don't want to have to ping myself to make Red mana, and our combo usually kills our opponent outright or not at all so I'm not convinced the two damage to our opponent's face is going to help all that much. Note: we can also target a creature with Harnessed Lightning and not spend any energy on it if we need some energy to get started with a Virtuoso while enemy removal is on the stack. We're not really a Control deck per se but we do need some interaction to avoid being run over. Then, we have a light Izzet removal package to keep us alive: Magma Spray and Harnessed Lightning for spot removal, two copies of Negate to force through our combo, and the two Censors mentioned earlier.

Finally, Saheeli Rai returns from her exile after the Copycat fiasco for not just one last job, not two, not three, but a full four: she filters our draw, she draws aggro (giving us more time to put the combo together), she can complete the 3x combo pieces needed by copying a Decoction Module or Panharmonicon, and she can rip the full set of artifacts we need out of our library if we can get to her ult. Looks terrible but it wears a lot of hats: it Scrys, it holds down the fort against small creatures while we set up, it provides us energy in advance of playing our Virtuosos, and it can chump-block when we just need one more turn to assemble our combo. To get to our combo, we have a lot of cheap card filtering: Opt is a God-Pharaoh-send and Censor is mainly Opt 5-6 with the fringe upside of maybe letting us counter something instead. But you still need to swing with those thopters, of course, so Reckless Fireweaver allows us to speed up the clock a turn and kill our opponent on the spot, if that's what we need. Once those are in place, play a Whirler Virtuoso with at least three energy in the tank and presto chango, infinite thopters. The deck is surprisingly consistent, considering the level of jank we're looking at here, and it's not even that pricey to put together.įirst, the combo: you need at least one Decoction Module on the battlefield and then some combination of two more Decoction Modules, Panharmonicons, and Mirage Mirrors (copying either a Decoction Module or a Panharmionicon, though it can also copy our opponent's creatures if we need blockers to buy time). Finally, don't forget an artifact lord such as Steel Overseer, Grand Architect and Chief of the Foundry to bolster your army's power. The goal of this deck is to create infinite thopter tokens with a Whirler Virtuoso and some combination of combo artifacts. You can revive two of your best artifact creatures right away to keep up the pressure, like Wurmcoil Engine, Sphinx of the Steel Winds, or Blightsteel Colossus. A boardwipe won't feel so bad if you cast Sharuum with Panharmonicon on the field.

You can also make use of sacrifice outlets, or trade creatures in combat if you can use Sharuum's ability many times. Synergy cards are strong here too, such as Strionic Resonator and Panharmonicon to double any triggered ability you are using, such as Sharuum's own. There are some cards out there you don't want to see on the battlefield at all. Counterspells are also a good call, from Dissolve to Render Silent and Pact of Negation. Similarly, use spot removal for any permanent type, from Swords to Plowshares and Utter End to Mortify and Detention Sphere. Two to five board wipes will likely do for a deck like this, and Scourglass should definitely be among them. If the board state is hostile and you don't have a combo, use the many boardwipes in these colors: Wrath of God, Damnation, Scourglass, Merciless Eviction, Cyclonic Rift, or Supreme Verdict.
